Birth Resources

The more information and access to research-based knowledge pregnant women are given, the more intelligent their decisions

Resources to help you have your birth your way...

A large part of my role is in supporting you to gain the knowledge you need in order to make the best, informed decisions for you.

Here I share some of my favourite resources, all designed to help you have a supported birth.

You can also listen to me on the Unbroken podcast.

Books

N.B. You might notice that where possible I have linked to sources other than Amazon. As an independent midwife I like to support independent and smaller retailers so if you have a local bookshop do consider going in to see if they can order any books you wish to read.

I would also recommend Natalie Meddings book ‘How to Have a Baby’, however it appears to be currently out of print. I do have a copy you can borrow, or you might be able to find a second hand copy.

7 Reasons to give birth at home

  1. Being in familiar surroundings helps you to feel comfortable, which allows things to unfold as they should, helping you with your birth.
  2. Not having to travel to a birth centre or hospital in labour and risk being sent away if they deem you are not close enough to birth.
  3. Being home in your own bed, with your family, your own bathroom and all of your own comforts after the birth.
  4. Continuity of care with a midwife that you have got to know well through pregnancy.
  5. Feeling comfortable will make it easier for you to to advocate for yourself and fully choose every step of your birth. If you wish to transfer to hospital you can still chose to do so.
  6. Having any children, pets or extra birth partners present if you wish.
  7. Lower likelihood of interventions and surgery than if you give birth in a hospital – studies have shown repeatedly that home is the safest place for mother and baby!
